Tarpon Springs is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States.


The population was 23,484 at the 2010 census and has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US.


Just 45 minutes north of St. Petersburg and in the Tampa Bay region is found along the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, Tarpon Springs was named for the fish which is found in abundance in nearby waters. But it also is known as the “sponge capital of the world,” and for its 51 miles of waterfront allure.


In addition, its charming downtown center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to the Historic District can stroll along brick streets while browsing in art galleries, antiques stores, and specialty shops housed in buildings dating from the late 1800s.

For the culturally-minded, the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts and Cultural Centers offer theater, art and historical exhibits, concerts, and other quality programs.

Spring Bayou now is the site of the largest Epiphany celebration in America. In a 105-year-old tradition, boys and young men dive for a cross every Jan. 6 in the chilly water; whoever retrieves it gets a year of good luck, according to tradition. This year, about 12,000 visitors witnessed the celebration. Louis Pappas,17 comes up with the cross during the 105th Epiphany celebration .
